PAPER TASK
Newspaper
is one of mass media that still exists in this digital era. Each country around
the world already has this kind of mass media whether it is accounted as a
famous newspaper or not. The news inside is always actual, up to date and
trusted by many people.
Nowadays,
Indonesian and British newspaper business are growth rapidly. We can see that
there is a variety of newspaper that has published in Indonesia and Britain such
as Surya, Jakarta Post, Radar Surabaya, Kompas, Jawa Pos, The Times, The
Guardian, The Daily News, Telegraph and many others. There are some factors
comparing Jawa pos as an Indonesian newspaper and The Times as a British
newspaper. At first, Both Jawa Pos and The Times are accounted as a famous and
most influential daily newspaper in their country. Besides, The Times is
accounted as one of Britain’s big three newspaper together with the Guardian
and The Daily Telegraph, while, Jawa Pos has his big competitor in Indonesia
that is Kompas newspaper. Moreover, Jawa Pos and The Times are the oldest
newspaper in their country too. In spite of that fact, The Times is the
originator of the widely used Times News Roman typeface and it was originally
developed by Stanley Morison, a British historian printing.
The
Times was founded by John Walter on the first January in 1785, as The Daily Universal Register and became The Times on January 1, 1788,
whereas Jawa Pos was established by Susueno
Tedjo or The Chung Shen in the first of July in 1949, as Djava-Post. We can see that The Times was gone earlier before Jawa
Pos.
The
Chung Shen was a movie ads employee in one of Movie Theater in Surabaya. He had
to advertise a movie in newspaper every day, so that she became interested in making
her own newspaper. After Jawa Pos became successful; she established another
newspaper that is Hwa Chiao Shen, a
mandarin newspaper, and de Vrije Pers,
a Dutch newspaper. The Chung Shen
business was not going smoothly all the time. In the end of 1970s, her income
was falling away sharply. Her previous newspaper was already retired. So that,
The Chung Shen decided to market Jawa Pos to the director of Tempo magazine.
Besides, three of her son and daughter decided to live in London, England and they
didn’t want to continue her mother’s business.
In
1848, The Times’ reputation had been laid by John Walter
III as a Britain’s preeminent national journal and daily historical record.
In the mid-1800s, The Times had become a widely respected influence on British
public opinion, and its circulation had grown from 5,000 copies into 1815 to
40,000 copies in 1850. While, Jawa Pos that was led by Dahlan
Iskan, who was head of bureau of Tempo previously,
had a great advance in five years. Its circulation increased from 6.000 copies into
300.000 copies in 1982. He was an accomplished man who brought Jawa Pos became
one of the largest newspapers in Indonesia. Jawa Pos also claimed as the
national newspaper that published from Surabaya. Both newspapers were led by
capable journalist and later they would have brought them becoming successful
company and well-known newspaper in their country.
Jawa
pos and The Times’ format are different. Yuyung Abdi as the senior journalist
of Jawa Pos said that Jawa Pos’ content was contextual or compact format in 90s.
Then, it changed and developed into broadsheet format since twentieth century
until now. On the other hand, the previous format of The Times was broadsheet
and it changed nowadays into compact format. According to market sector,
Quality becomes the most important thing for The Times. So that is why The
Times has at least advertisements in its newspaper. Besides, the actual and
factual news is more important than any other purposes, while Jawa Pos has many
advertisements in it. From the advertisements, Jawa Pos nowadays could be one
of mass media that can be used by some agencies or companies to promote their
product, while the reader, who has some needs or the same purpose about it, can
use its advertisements well. There are some columns that have its special
readers too like DetEksi column that
was enjoyed by teenage readers and For
Her column that was enjoyed by many women readers, because the news was
filled by women’s hobbies and its complexities, well, lately there was a Life Begin at 50 column that talked
about any kinds of human Indonesian stories and problems, healthy tips and etc.
In short, Jawa Pos’ aim was for all Indonesian purposes and ages.
The
scope of these newspapers is very wide, so that people can access it easier. Jawa
Pos has published its local newspaper such as Radar Surabaya, Radar Banyuwangi,
Radar Kudus and etc. And The Times has such literary supplements. Those are The
Times Science Review, Times Atlases and The Sunday Times Travel Magazine. Further,
The Times also has its sister newspaper known as The Sunday Times newspaper. Though
they have the same name, they formed independently.
According
to party politics, there are two main parties in Britain. Those are
Conservative Party and Labour Party, and they have dominated elections since
1918. The Times newspaper supported Labour Party in Britain. While, Indonesia
adopts multi-party so that is why party politics in Indonesia is very crowded
whereas in the new Order era (1965-1998), the political parties amounted to
three parties only like PDIP, Golkar and PPP. Jawa Pos as a mass media has
clarified that its side of political editorial staff is netral. It means that
Jawa Pos does not support any political parties. Moreover, Jawa Pos has
asserted from the start as an independent newspaper. Jawa Pos also has its own
motto to differentiate with another newspaper that is “Selalu Ada Yang Baru”,
and well, “Top people take The Times” is a slogan of The Times whereas its
sister newspaper also has its own motto for the newspaper that is “Sunday isn't
Sunday without the Sunday Times”.
In
conclusion, there are some aspects that we can take to compare between Jawa Pos
as Indonesian newspaper and The Times as British newspaper. Both newspapers are
not totally different. There are some parts that make them same like both of
them are the oldest newspaper in their country.
